Poland Declares National Mourning Following Deadly Downtown Kraków Shooting and Discovery of Homicides

Following deadly shootings in Krakow, Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced a statewide period of national mourning for Sunday and Monday. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the city center, when an armed gunman shot four women and two men, injuring at least 15 other people.

Later, the bodies of three more individuals were discovered at the apartment of the 25-year-old perpetrator. According to police, these victims were his parents and his 21-year-old sister. Authorities reported that the man began shooting, seemingly indiscriminately, towards people from a car he drove onto the market square around 3 PM. The heavily armed suspect was shot by police and seriously injured.

The investigators are pursuing a lone perpetrator scenario. Poland’s Interior Minister, Marcin Kierwinski, suggested the motive might be rooted in far-right extremism. Currently, all evidence points toward the alleged attacker being fascinated by far-right ideologies, though the investigation is ongoing.
