Despite the ongoing low water crisis, Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) maintains that there are currently no supply shortages. Addressing the “Rheinische Post” prior to a coordination meeting with the state transport ministers on Wednesday, Bilger stated that supply is currently guaranteed. He added that the risk of supply problems diminishes as more freight traffic is shifted from inland waterways to rail and road. The talks with the states are intended to coordinate actions and discuss additional measures, as low water conditions are expected to continue until the end of August, necessitating continued proactive responses.
Simultaneously, the Minister praised the Deutsche Bahn, noting: “I am grateful that the railway acted immediately and provided additional capacity.” He mentioned that this includes extra wagons, and that the quantity of these wagons is expected to increase. However, Bilger stressed that the availability of suitable routes and the necessary personnel are equally crucial factors. He confirmed that these elements remain under ongoing discussion with the railway company.
