Ahead of the cabinet’s decision on the reform of German intelligence services, Nina Warken, head of the Chancellor’s Office (CDU), emphasized the importance of the plans. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Wednesday, Warken noted that the cabinet would be laying “the groundwork for the most extensive and fundamental reform of the intelligence services since their inception.” As the official responsible for the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), she stressed that Germany cannot stand idly by while influence operations, sabotage, and threats against the foundational pillars of the constitution and free society continue to escalate.
The federal minister for special tasks stressed that addressing these modern threats requires services to be equipped with enhanced powers and timely measures. “In the future, the BND will finally be able to operate at eye level with our partners-in order to protect our security, our values, and our freedom,” Warken concluded.
