The Sozialverband Deutschland (SoVD) welcomes the planned reform of the BAföG scholarship, although the organization simultaneously demands that the funding be independent of parents. Michaela Engelmeier, the head of the SoVD, told the “Rheinische Post” that the reform must now be implemented promptly.
She explained that many students cannot rely on their parents for financial support and are dependent on a reliable, existence-securing BAföG to sustain their studies. She noted that the situation is further complicated by high rents, particularly in major metropolitan areas. For the SoVD, achieving a BAföG that is independent of parental income remains a decisive goal.
Engelmeier stressed the importance of education, stating, “Those who demand innovation and a highly trained young workforce must reliably fund education and affordable housing, because a strong BAföG is a matter of equal opportunity and future viability.”
The federal cabinet is scheduled to address the BAföG reform this Wednesday.
