Palestinian Flag Flown at Reichstag Sparks Political Crisis and Calls for Urgent Security Upgrade

On Sunday, a German flag was stolen outside the Reichstag building in Berlin. According to the police, a man replaced the flag with a Palestinian one.

Following the incident, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU) voiced sharp criticism. Speaking to Bild, she stated that it was “unbelievable” that “Palestine disruptors” would not even restrain themselves in front of the national flag-the symbol of German unity-through their criminal actions. Klöckner asserted that such fanatical behavior inevitably resulted in criminal charges.

The Parliament President also called on the state of Berlin to provide better security for the area. She made it clear that she cannot accept incidents like this occurring at the German Bundestag. Klöckner stressed that the Parliament must not become a mere backdrop for activism of any type. She argued that the German Bundestag requires increased protection, covering not only the building’s interiors but also its immediate surroundings, making the state of Berlin’s involvement essential. Klöckner concluded that security measures are necessary to create the environment where openness can thrive.
