NRW transport minister Oliver Krischer (The Greens) reported progress in the ongoing joint efforts between the federal government and the states to mitigate the impact of the current heatwave. Following recent discussions between the federal government and the various states regarding the low water levels, Krischer told the “Rheinische Post” that the exchanges were constructive.
Several immediate measures were discussed that could help temporarily alleviate the crisis by shifting cargo to different modes of transport. These include the temporary suspension of truck bans on Sundays-a measure already implemented in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW)-as well as the postponement of construction work wherever feasible, both on highways and waterways. Krischer cited the example of the Wanne-Eickel lock in NRW, which was shifted to prevent further stress on shipping traffic.
The Green politician stressed that these actions are crucial steps to support businesses and the logistics industry during this crisis. However, he added that medium- and long-term solutions must now be addressed with the same level of seriousness.
For NRW, improving the navigation channel on the Rhine remains a key priority. Krischer stated that he expects the federal government’s commitment to implementing ready-to-go measures in the short term to apply also to the optimization of the Rhine stretch between Duisburg and Stürzelberg (the northern boundary of Cologne). The federal transport minister had previously indicated he would review this matter, and Krischer emphasized that a concrete decision must now follow quickly. He views such a commitment as an important signal to the shipping sector, urging immediate action to ensure that the waterways remain capable even during future low-water periods.
