Energy Bills Shock Households Face Relief

The CDU/CSU parliamentary group is pushing for a broader scope of energy price relief, extending beyond the government’s current proposal focused solely on businesses. According to statements made to the “Tagesspiegel”, parliamentary group secretary Steffen Bilger expressed the group’s intention to explore options for reducing the electricity tax for private households within the parliamentary process.

Bilger acknowledged the disappointment stemming from the recent cabinet decision and underscored the commitment made in both the election manifesto and the subsequent coalition agreement to provide these reliefs. He emphasized the need for the upcoming black-red coalition summit to prioritize measures leading to cost savings.

Focus will be placed on establishing a more favorable balance between revenues and expenditures in the medium and long term. In light of the recently presented budget draft, which includes significant new borrowing, Bilger stressed the urgency of discussing reforms that can generate savings and ensure fiscal responsibility alongside any potential easing of debt limits.

Efforts to alleviate pressure on social security systems could be fostered through various avenues, including the implementation of the “active pension” initiative, alongside measures promoting economic growth, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and introducing more flexible daily working hours – all initiatives previously agreed upon within the coalition framework. The parliamentary group awaits corresponding legislative proposals from the cabinet concerning these previously agreed upon measures.
