CDU Demands Alternative Relief Measures as Failed Tax Break Sparks Political Pressure

The CDU is drawing significant criticism over the lack of planned financial relief measures for citizens. Dennis Radtke, who heads the party’s employee wing, is calling for a replacement solution for the failed €1,000 “relief bonus”. Speaking to the Stern, Radtke stated that the complete absence of a remedy or follow-up plan for the €1,000 bonus is disappointing, characterizing it as a broken political promise. He further noted that, in his view, the coalition is currently facing intense public scrutiny, stressing the need not to disappoint expectations or lose any further trust.

This criticism comes after the coalition committee decided on Tuesday evening not to proceed with the €1,000 “relief bonus” which had failed last week in the Bundesrat, and consequently making no decision on a direct replacement.

Instead, Radtke proposed alternative actions. He advocated that the government consider making up to €1,000 tax-free from sources like Christmas bonuses, overtime pay, or comparable collective special payments. According to Radtke, this approach would be a pragmatic way to recognize employee performance and provide concrete financial relief to workers in small and medium-income brackets.
