The construction of the so-called “Zukunftszentrum” (Future Center) was ceremonially started in Halle (Saale) on Thursday. This center is dedicated to reflecting on German unity and European transformation. Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) from Berlin attended the first groundbreaking ceremony at Riebeckplatz. The Minister stated, “The Future Center will bring people together-for an exchange about what has shaped us, what moves us today, and how we can collectively shape our country.” He added that this focus is more crucial than ever, particularly during a time of profound change. The initiative for the Future Center was prompted in 2020 by the “30 Years of Peaceful Revolution and German Unity” commission. The Federal Government assigned an independent working group to develop a concept, which was subsequently approved by the German Parliament (Bundestag) in 2022. The center is projected to employ 200 staff members and will operate with an annual budget of 40 million euros, with its official opening scheduled for 2030.
