Global Markets Hold Steady as Investors Await US Interest Rate Policy Details

The DAX failed to find a clear direction on Friday, maintaining a cautious trajectory through the morning trading session despite a steady start to the day. Around 12:30 pm, the index stood at approximately 26,020 points, marking a marginal increase of 0.2 percent compared to the previous day’s closing level.

Market analyst Thomas Altmann of QC Partners noted that while bond markets are still closely monitoring developments in Washington, the recent price movements indicated that the announcement by the US Treasury Secretary brought some calm, but not genuine relief. He emphasized that investors are now awaiting further details on how the US government intends to manage its high interest costs, stating that the markets are looking for a long-term strategy rather than merely internal reallocations within the maturity structure.

On the options front, Altmann mentioned that August represents one of the smaller expiry dates. Today, none of the ten largest pending options positions are set to expire on the DAX. However, the largest expiry of the day-a call option with a strike price of 26,300 points-is significant, with 7,300 contracts expiring today. An additional 7,100 put contracts are set to expire at the same strike price.

Globally, the DAX has ended four of the last five trading days of the week in negative territory. This frequency of losses matches the rate recorded in April of this year. However, yesterday’s trading volume was the second lowest of the current calendar year, suggesting that gains are still being taken cautiously. With very few sellers encountering even fewer buyers, the market is characterized as one of waiting. According to Altmann, the future direction of the index will only be determined when more investors participate actively in the market through buying and selling.

In related financial movements, the European common currency strengthened on Friday afternoon. The Euro traded at $1.1706, meaning the Dollar was obtainable for 0.8543 Euros.

Commodities saw varying trends. The price of gold performed well, climbing significantly, hitting $4,586 per fine ounce in the afternoon, which represents a 1.5 percent increase. This translates to a price of 125.97 Euros per gram. Conversely, the price of oil saw a slight rise. The Brent crude oil price for the North Sea registered $93.93 per barrel around 12 pm German time on Friday, which was a 0.2 percent increase of 15 cents from the end of the previous trading session.
