Merz Prioritizes Economic Growth, Demands Faster Implementation of Reforms and Tax Relief

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) plans to steer his ministers toward a clear course during the cabinet meeting in Neuhardenberg. Speaking to “Bild am Sonntag,” Merz emphasized that “growth and employment are what Germany is about. This is the most important issue. Therefore, full concentration on this, keeping our eyes on the ball.”

The Chancellor particularly demands quicker pace in the legislative processes regarding the reforms decided before the summer recess, which cover tax changes, pensions, reducing bureaucracy, and digitalization. Merz stated that historic decisions have been made and must now be implemented as quickly as possible, expressing strong confidence that this will be achieved. The objective is a rapid and comprehensive relief for the economy, especially for the craft sector and SMEs. The CDU politician confirmed that during the cabinet meeting, he will dedicate effort to mobilizing his team for this task.

Addressing the substantial criticism coming from the business community, the opposition, and even within his own ranks, Merz declared, “The federal government will not be deterred from its course; we know what is right and good for the country. We will not be swayed.”

Separately, “Bild am Sonntag,” citing its own sources, reported that Merz spent two full days in his vacation home on Lake Tegernsee during his summer break. During this time, he met with his new chief of staff, Nina Warken (CDU). They reportedly discussed how structures, government coordination, and legislative processes could be improved.
