The Federal Government intends to significantly bolster its position in Artificial Intelligence (AI), although it has apparently acknowledged that it has forfeited a leading spot. Speaking at the periphery of the cabinet meeting held in Neuhardenberg, Brandenburg, Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU) commented that the “gap between European models and the leading models from America and China is too large.”
However, he noted that the objective is not always to be number one. “We are the third-largest economy, and I would say that the goal of being number three or number four in the world is also a good interim target.”
The better chances, he stated, appear to lie in the field of industrial AI. Wildberger reaffirmed that AI remains the top priority in the high-tech agenda. Furthermore, his ministry is actively working to attract one of the AI Giga-factories to Germany. The Federal Government has already released roadmaps for key technologies, including AI, microelectronics, and quantum technologies.
