The U.S. Senate on Tuesday approved a significant tax and spending package proposed by President Donald Trump. The vote resulted in a 50-50 tie, with three Republican senators voting against the measure. Vice President JD Vance’s vote ultimately decided the outcome. Before the multi-billion dollar bill can take effect, it must now pass the House of Representatives.
The legislation allocates hundreds of billions of dollars in additional funding for immigration authorities, border security and the military. Tax breaks, primarily benefiting corporations and high-income earners, are intended to be offset by approximately one trillion dollars in cuts to the state-run Medicaid program. Approximately 12 million individuals with disabilities or low incomes could face loss of health insurance coverage as a result of these reductions.
Further cuts included in the package are planned for food assistance programs. Additionally, climate research stations are slated for closure and incentives for the expansion of renewable energy are to be reduced.
