Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) has publicly called for a stricter approach by the federal government when dealing with China. Speaking to RTL and ntv following a cabinet retreat in Neuhardenberg, Klingbeil stated that the discussions centered on determining future policy. The Minister stressed that China operates outside established norms, pointing out the presence of both subsidies and significant state influence. He warned against being naive in international dealings with Beijing, arguing that Germany must adopt a fundamentally different course of action.
A key component of this new strategy involves providing stronger protection for European and German goods, alongside an increased focus on utilizing domestic industries and “local content.” According to Klingbeil, this shift is necessary to bolster the overall competitiveness of both Germany and Europe.
Shifting to broader domestic challenges, Klingbeil addressed the difficult climate facing the country, referencing the upcoming state elections. He noted that Germany has experienced five years without growth, jobs are under threat, and the international situation remains complex. Despite the challenging political landscape, he affirmed that the current coalition remains united in its commitment to prioritizing “the economy and jobs.”
