Sven Hüber, the deputy federal chairman of the Police Union (GdP), announced his immediate resignation. According to Hüber, the decision stems from “several legal and judicial proceedings I initiated concerning media allegations that defame and libel my reputation, relating to time before my service in the Federal Police and with the GdP.”
In further statement on Wednesday, Hüber explained that he wishes to shield the union from the daily stream of unsustainable accusations made by the GdP while the necessary legal disputes unfold. He noted that following intensive discussions with the GdP’s federal chairman, Jochen Kopelke, the executive federal board, and the federal control committee, he informed them of his final decision, emphasizing that it was taken “to protect my union and to defend against false allegations.”
The controversy involves reports from the magazine “Apollo News,” which previously alleged that Hüber, while serving as a GDR border officer, was instrumental in implementing the shoot-to-kill order. A cited eyewitness reportedly made detailed accusations against Hüber, claims which Hüber denies.
