Stefan Evers, the CDU Berlin leading candidate, advocates for pressuring homeless individuals originating from the Schengen area to return to their home countries. The Christian Democrat told Focus that he believes individuals who are unable to permanently sustain themselves must leave the country. He asserts that freedom of movement within the Schengen area is conditional, a current legal standard that must be enforced.
Evers plans to address this issue by engaging directly with the countries of origin, stating, “We need to talk in plain terms with the home countries.” He pointed out that statistics clearly demonstrate that a very large proportion of the people housed in Berlin facilities come from Eastern Europe. Consequently, he feels that the city of Berlin must demand that these nations fulfill their obligations.
When asked whether he intends to travel to countries such as Romania to initiate this dialogue, Evers responded that travel is unnecessary. He explained that since Berlin is the capital and all the embassies are located there, diplomatic efforts can be made locally.
