Facing the latest UN forecast predicting 2.8 degrees of global warming, Andreas Audretsch, vice spokesperson for the Green Party, is demanding significant increased investment in clean technologies alongside a reform of the national debt brake.
Speaking to RTL and ntv, Audretsch stated that the climate crisis is rapidly escalating. He called the 2.8-degree report a “terrifying piece of news” for the future, and advocated for tackling climate protection and reducing the burden caused by high energy prices simultaneously.
His proposals include accelerating the transition to electric mobility and new technologies, as well as providing direct subsidies to citizens. Audretsch emphasized that the massive overhaul of the economy requires major government involvement. “We need high investment during this transformative phase, especially state investments in new technologies, such as expanding charging infrastructure,” he stated.
To fund these necessary developments, he reaffirmed the necessity of reforming the debt brake. He stressed that job security hinges on strengthening the production of domestically manufactured heat pumps and electric vehicles.
Audretsch noted that technological production is expanding globally, stating, “The question is not whether it happens, but where it happens.” He alerted the public that China is already aggressively scaling up production, warning that Germany must take proactive measures to ensure that future technologies not only happen but thrive within the country.
