Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU) has asserted the need for specific rules governing the use of smart glasses. Speaking at the IFA in Berlin to RTL and ntv, Wildberger stated that the potential for misuse of the technology must be taken seriously even in Germany. This follows similar calls from Karianne Tung, Norway’s Digital Minister, who had previously advocated for stronger regulations on smart eyewear, particularly concerning possible intrusions into privacy.
The Federal Digital Minister continued, acknowledging that rules are necessary because the devices are not intended for every type of use. However, he stressed that while regulation is needed, it must not limit the potential of the technology itself. Wildberger believes it is important that any regulations are designed in a way that does not stifle the utility or benefits the technology provides.
Ultimately, the CDU politician argued that smart glasses should be subject to the same regulations as other technologies. He stated that “what I am allowed to do with this glasses, and what I am not allowed to do in normal life, must also apply to it.”
