The European Commission has announced a €200 million investment package for Greenland. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled this “Global Gateway” partnership package on Monday during her visit to Nuuk. The funds are allocated to be invested in Greenland during 2026 and 2027, covering key sectors such as education, fisheries, and critical raw materials.
Von der Leyen affirmed the EU’s commitment to the region, stating, “Greenland can count on the EU. That was my message during my previous visit. Today I have returned to present the concrete results of our close cooperation.” She noted that this package will create new opportunities and ensure a strong and engaged EU presence in both Greenland and the Arctic, emphasizing that “Greenland is a strategic ally and a trusted friend.”
Furthermore, the EU, Greenland, and Denmark signed a new joint declaration aimed at strengthening their partnership. This declaration intends to intensify cooperation in areas like infrastructure development, sustainable resource management, clean energy production, and research.
A particular emphasis of this collaboration is improving the quality of life in Greenland. Initiatives include investments in housing, supporting sustainable tourism, and providing assistance to small businesses. Additionally, the EU plans to enhance digital connectivity by expanding satellite capabilities and modernizing the energy supply in remote settlements.
