According to Scharping, the word serves to “shake up a society that is content and reluctant to reflect upon the prerequisites of its good life.” The former Social Democrat emphasized that a country’s defense capability relies heavily on the will of its people to defend it. He noted that Russia is currently testing the resilience of all Europeans, adding that “drones, disinformation, and hybrid warfare-we are already part of Vladimir Putin’s war.” Furthermore, Scharping highly praised his successor, stating that “Pistorius is the best Defense Minister since Helmut Schmidt, myself included.”
