Following Germany’s poor performance in the new Pisa study, Greens chairwoman Franziska Brantner is questioning the current education system and demanding enhanced cooperation within the federal structure.
Speaking to the “Rheinische Post,” Brantner stated, “We finally need to get out of this fragmented, petty localism.” Although the states retain responsibility for education, she emphasized that the federal government and the states must collaborate far more closely, learn from each other, and officially adopt successful concepts. She stressed that a child’s educational quality should never depend on the state where they are born, the school they attend, or the teacher they happen to have.
The Greens leader rejected the idea of another educational summit or subsequent commission, arguing instead that “We need a fundamental nationwide education reform.” According to Brantner, Germany has been suffering from an educational policy disaster for decades that can no longer be sugarcoated.
She continued, noting that a key part of the German promise of freedom is that opportunities exist and that hard work is rewarded. She lamented that the latest Pisa study has once again broken this promise, necessitating a renewal of that fundamental commitment.
