Michael Hose, a Member of the Bundestag from Thuringia, is set to become the CDU’s Deputy General Secretary. The party announced on Friday that Hose will be succeeding Christina Stumpp in the role.
Friedrich Merz, the party leader, and Stumpp jointly decided during private discussions that Christina Stumpp will step down from the position of Deputy General Secretary on September 21, 2026. Hose is expected to take over the role initially on a temporary, commissarial basis, though his position will only be officially confirmed at a party congress.
Citing Merz, the party noted that Christina Stumpp has “contributed to our party through high personal commitment and integration.” Furthermore, during this “restructuring of the party leadership,” Merz emphasized his desire for the party to more strongly represent the people of unified Germany, West and East.
The party stated that Michael Hose, who previously served as a legislator, teacher, and headmaster from Erfurt, brings “important perspectives that are of great added value for the work of the CDU Germany Presidency.” His experiences and biography are seen as a strong complement to those of Franziska Hoppermann.
