During a crossing from the main island of Java to Borneo in the Java Sea late Sunday night, an Indonesian ferry encountered a storm and subsequently disappeared from radar detection. According to official authorities, at least one person died, while 102 individuals were rescued. A total of 243 people were on board the vessel.
The search for the remaining passengers continued initially. The ferry was traveling from Surabaya to the city of Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan and was last reported at around 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, approximately 150 kilometers south of Banjarmasin. A search and rescue ship and a helicopter were dispatched to the site of the incident, and all other vessels in the Java Sea area were asked to look out for signs of passengers.
