Volker Beck, the president of the German-Israeli Society and a member of the Green Party, suggests that even if the government in Israel changes, a swift end to the war in Gaza is unlikely. Speaking to the broadcasters RTL and ntv, Beck stated that peace in Gaza is only possible if Hamas is disarmed. Opposition leader Eisenkot has announced that he intends to resolve the Hamas issue within the next 18 months, meaning he would see the war through to completion. Beck, however, believes that Germany hopes the opposition will act differently on crucial security matters, a risk Israel cannot afford to take. He warned that Hamas has announced a repeat of massacres if it is militarily capable of doing so, adding that any Israeli government must confront this danger by eliminating it.
Concurrently, Beck advocated for a political transition following the parliamentary elections. Although Prime Minister Netanyahu has taken various necessary actions, Beck believes it would be beneficial for Israel to see a change in leadership because Netanyahu has lost a significant amount of credibility both domestically and internationally in recent years. He expressed hope that plans to transform the rule of law and restrict judicial oversight of politics would be halted. As a possible government structure, Beck mentioned a “national unity” coalition that would include Netanyahu’s Likud party alongside the most important opposition parties.
