Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed that its partners secure an agreement with Russia aimed at halting the destruction of critical infrastructure. Zelenskyy informed the public on Monday that essential goods, such as food and energy, are particularly vulnerable because Russian attacks are primarily targeting these sectors. However, he expressed doubts about Russia’s willingness to abide by such a pact.
He noted that should it be possible to guarantee that Russia refrains from attacking Ukraine’s power grid, other energy facilities, critical infrastructure, and food supply chains, Ukraine is prepared to suspend its own attacks in return. Nevertheless, he stressed that this agreement must be “reliable and long-term,” warning it could collapse after the Russian elections if the pressure on gasoline and diesel subsidies eases during that period.
This statement comes while former US President Donald Trump previously claimed that both Russia and Ukraine had pledged to cease attacking the other nation’s energy facilities. Zelenskyy’s current remarks, however, sound noticeably more cautious. As of now, no reaction from Moscow has been issued regarding Trump’s previous assertions.
