Hubert Hüppe, Chairman of the Seniors’ Union (CDU), advised Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz against holding a kind of confidence vote within the CDU party bodies following the elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin. According to Hüppe’s comments to the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday edition), “I think it’s not right for the Chancellor to present a confidence vote at the Federal Executive Board on Monday. Furthermore, that is the wrong body. Such questions belong in parliament and with the parliamentary group.”
Beyond the institutional issues, Hüppe also cautioned Merz against the move on the grounds that such an action would delay necessary reforms. Although he anticipates an open discussion without taboos at the CDU Federal Executive Board meeting, which Merz had promised during the last meeting, Hüppe emphasized that no one would believe that everything has gone well for the government and the union in recent months. He stressed that consequences must now be drawn from the situation, though he stated that essential reforms should not be called into question again. “We finally have to show results,” Hüppe concluded. This advice came after “Table-Media” had reported that the chancellor had already scheduled a committee meeting for Sunday evening to “indirectly” pose a question of confidence.
