The eight serving CDU state leaders issued a joint statement backing Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In the declaration, released on Wednesday, they stated that “people can trust us to address their problems” and affirmed that as state premiers, they intend and will contribute to the Chancellor’s efforts alongside him.
The statement further stressed that Germany currently requires more than ever “stability.” It emphasized that in the current situation, the unity, decisiveness, and clear direction of the Christian Democrats of Germany are essential. The national CDU maintains its willingness to collaborate with all democratic forces, adding that Germany also needs reliability and resolute action. They concluded that “trust will be reestablished when politics resolves the problems and questions that concern people in their daily lives.”
This declaration came at a time when the debate over a potential change in leadership is gaining momentum. Most recently, Merz cancelled his planned trip to the UN General Assembly next week because his presence in Berlin was deemed necessary. Rumor has it that the critical showdown could occur following the elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin this weekend.
