The Bavarian State Parliament President, Ilse Aigner (CSU), has reportedly received backing from the women’s group within the Union faction in the Bundestag for a potential candidacy as Federal President. Mechthild Heil, the head of the women’s group, told the “Rheinische Post” that Aigner is “the most suitable person for this office” and remains their choice for the position. Heil, who is also a member of the CDU’s federal executive board, stated that the Union will be discussing the candidacy at a meeting scheduled for Monday. Several top politicians, not only from the CDU but also from the SPD and the Greens, have expressed support for Ilse Aigner in the race for Federal President. The Federal Assembly is set to decide on the successor to Frank-Walter Steinmeier on January 30th. This assembly is composed of all members of the Bundestag and an equal number of members elected by the state parliaments. Any member of the Federal Assembly can submit a written nomination for the Federal President to the President of the Bundestag. The Union is expected to have the majority of members in the Federal Assembly and could potentially form a majority with the SPD. While no official nomination has been made yet, Bavaria’s Minister-President and CSU leader, Markus Söder, had previously put Ilse Aigner forward in April. She had previously been seen as a potential internal party rival to Söder ahead of the 2028 state election.
