Klaus Holetschek, the head of the CSU parliamentary group in Bavaria, has urged Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to deliver a “grand speech,” given the widespread sense of unease currently felt by many people. Speaking to the news portal “T-Online,” Holetschek argued that the President should seize the opportunity to give a substantial address that provides national guidance. According to Holetschek, as head of state, Steinmeier has a duty to inform the public about the major challenges Germany currently faces and emphasize that the responsibility now rests with every individual to pull together and avoid division.
The CSU politician believes that now is the opportune moment for such a statement, likening the need for national resolve to the “rebound speech” delivered by Roman Herzog in 1997.
Holetschek noted that Germany is currently undergoing a phase of general uncertainty. While he acknowledged that migration policy is a critical issue, he stressed that it is not the only one. He added that future anxieties stemming from global developments, rising living costs-such as fuel prices-and persistent questions in health and social policy are also significantly affecting many citizens.
This combination of issues, he claimed, is leading to a decline in trust in the political center and in state institutions. According to the head of the CSU parliamentary group, regaining this faith is a task shared by all in politics, but it also falls to representatives of these institutions, such as the Federal President.
