Frei Warns CDU Against Minority Government, Stating SPD Coalition is Essential for Reform

Party leader Thorsten Frei of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has strongly warned his party against the possibility of a coalition government in the federal parliament ruled by a minority. According to Frei, calling such a scenario is a delusion, stating that the CDU cannot simply search for its majority on either the left or the right.

Frei insisted that the difficult and necessary reforms required by the country could never be implemented under a minority government. He argued that if the Alternative for Germany (AfD) were to preside over a situation like that, the entire parliamentary process would be derailed. For the faction leader, such a scenario would mean the “end for the Union,” leading him to conclude emphatically: “We certainly won’t let that happen.”

Frei also clearly affirmed his commitment to a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPD), asserting that the CDU only commands a majority in that specific alliance. He maintains that all the vital reforms needed can only be achieved within that configuration.
