Steffen Krach, the SPD’s top candidate for the Berlin House of Representatives election, is calling on Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to publicly advocate for Berlin in its bid to host the German Olympic events. While Krach stated to RTL and ntv that politics does not determine the outcome of the bid, he argued that a clear endorsement from the Chancellor would be beneficial. The endorsement should affirm that the 2040 and 2044 Olympic and Paralympic Games would take place in Berlin and other East German states. Krach asked that the Chancellor take a public position ahead of the German Olympic Sports Confederation’s decision on September 26th. He suggested that Merz could clearly commit to strengthening the East and supporting Berlin, ensuring that federal funds are not diverted solely to Munich. It is important, Krach added, that the focus encompasses not just the capital city, but also Eastern Germany as a whole.
