Steffen Krach, the SPD’s top candidate for the Berlin House of Representatives election, has confirmed that he will not step down as the state chairman of his party, even if the election results are poor. Krach stated to the networks RTL and ntv that he was elected as the state chairman four months ago with 95% support. “And because of that, I will naturally continue this job,” he said.
While Krach did not commit to whether his party will automatically remain in government after Sunday’s election, he acknowledged that no coalition could be formed without the SPD, based on current polling figures. However, he cautioned that if the polls prove accurate, the mandate to govern might initially rest with other parties.
He explained that the state executive board would deliberate calmly after the election day to determine what configuration is possible. “As the Social Democrats, we make our decision based on who we can work with to implement the best policies for Berlin.”
