A moderate earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Sunday. Geologists initially reported the magnitude as 6.4, although such values are often subject to later corrections. The tremor took place in the northeast of the island of New Guinea at 7:17 PM local time (11:17 AM German time). The quake occurred at a depth of 104 kilometers, with the epicenter situated approximately 49.6 kilometers north-northeast of the small town of Kainantu, located in the Eastern Highlands province. As of now, there were no reports of damages or casualties. However, earthquakes of this magnitude are known to frequently cause damage within a radius of up to 70 kilometers.
