Following the elections held this Sunday in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, SPD Bundestag member Markus Töns is advocating for a comprehensive restructuring of the party. Speaking to the Handelsblatt, Töns asserted that to achieve a strong future presence, the separation between the party organization and ministerial roles is essential. He argues that the SPD requires a leadership style that is more inherently political, capable of openly addressing problems, a dynamic he claims cannot be achieved from within a governmental office.
Töns stated that the party needs to “fundamentally change course,” even though he does not favor internal personnel debates and believes an immediate party convention or conference is unnecessary. “But the time has come for us to take genuine consequences from the election results rather than simply acting surprised,” he continued. “We are no longer appealing to the voters, and particularly to the working class.” He added that long-established policy traditions are overdue for review, and consequently, he also sees a need for adjustments regarding current reform initiatives.
The SPD politician belongs to the influential Ruhr SPD group, which had sharpened its criticism of the federal government’s reform agenda in a policy paper three weeks prior.
