Following the devastating loss in the state election, Daniel Peters, the CDU’s state chairman in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has announced his resignation. He informed the public Monday evening that after the “crashing electoral defeat,” he felt it was necessary to accept personal consequences. The CDU failed to gain a seat in the state parliament, securing only 4.9% of the votes. Peters, who had been confirmed as the party leader with a large majority just in June, is therefore stepping down as a result of the election disaster.
Further within the party, CDU General Secretary Katy Hoffmeister has also resigned, having previously served as the Minister of Justice. Deputy state chairman Ann Christin von Allwörden had already announced her resignation that afternoon. She stated her desire to take responsibility for the election outcome and plans to return to her former career as a police officer.
Philipp Amthor, the previous deputy state chairman and state minister in the Chancellery, is scheduled to take charge of the regional CDU leadership on an interim basis. He explained that the party needs time to process this defeat and suggested that a state party convention could potentially be held early next year. In recent years, the CDU in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has seen several leaders pass through, including Vincent Kokert, Eckhardt Rehberg, and Michael Sack.
