Germany Demands More Aid

A group of Green Party members of the German Bundestag have formally requested increased financial support for Ukraine in a letter addressed to Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU. According to a report by “Bild”, the letter, signed by parliamentarians Robin Wagener, Sara Nanni, Sebastian Schäfer and Anton Hofreiter, urges the Chancellor to adjust relevant budget allocations to bolster aid to Ukraine, both in the current process and with consideration for the upcoming fiscal year.

The Green Party politicians expressed concern that failure to increase this support could heighten the likelihood of Russia exerting undue influence over Ukraine. The letter references the Green Party’s prior role in facilitating a substantial increase in Ukraine aid through a reform of Germany’s debt brake, utilizing the majority previously held in the Bundestag. They emphasize that this reform created further opportunities to support Ukraine that remain untapped, suggesting the potential for further financial commitment.
