Police in Grevenbroich discovered a suspicious fireworks device near the former Frimmersdorf coal power plant on Wednesday. Both WDR and “Bild” report the same details. A spokesperson for the Rhein-Kreis Neuss Police informed “Bild” that the item, described as a spherical bomb, was located just 10 to 15 meters from a high-voltage pylon. The device was seized and rendered unusable by explosives experts from the State Criminal Police Office.
According to police, the fireworks item could not have caused damage if it had exploded. Security personnel from the energy company RWE discovered the suspicious object in the afternoon near the pylon and contacted the police. It remains unclear whether there was an attempt to ignite the device, which was wrapped in adhesive tape, or how long the object had been in that location.
Investigators initially found no connection between this incident and the sabotage actions on power lines earlier in September. Authorities stated that the found spherical bomb is “not comparable” to those previous events. Investigators are now working to determine the circumstances behind the discovery.
