Concerns are mounting over a rise in incidents at swimming pools across Germany, prompting a strong statement from the President of the German Swimming Masters Association (BDS), Peter Harzheim. He has voiced criticism regarding the increasing prevalence of distracted parents focused on mobile devices while their children are in the water.
“Many parents are solely preoccupied with their smartphones, neglecting their children” Harzheim told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. He described mobile phones as a significant problem in pool environments.
The BDS President also expressed frustration regarding a shifting dynamic at pools, noting that swimming instructors are increasingly being perceived by parents as childcare providers. “We are not kindergarten staff. Our role is to ensure a pleasant experience for all pool visitors and are responsible for their safety. We are not obligated to constantly monitor children.
Statistics released by the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) reflect a worrying trend. In 2024, 411 people lost their lives in aquatic incidents, a substantial increase of 112 fatalities compared to 2021. The DLRG and BDS are urging increased vigilance and parental responsibility to mitigate future risks and ensure safer pool environments.
