Violent Clashes Erupt in Bremen During Unity Day Protests; Police Targeted

Violent incidents took place in Bremerhaven on Friday evening just before the central celebration for German Unity Day. Early Saturday morning, the police reported that a large group of people gathered at the Sielwall intersection and attacked Einsatzkräfte (emergency responders/police) using pyrotechnics, stones, and bottles. Police detained suspects and cleared the intersection, and one police officer was injured by pyrotechnics and required medical treatment.

Earlier that evening, a protest gathering took place under the motto “What you are celebrating: Social cuts, militarization, antifeminism!” Around 6 p.m., approximately 700 participants started from Brill and marched through the Neustadt. With the motto “No peace with the nation. Against nationalism, militarization, and social cuts,” the route led across the Wilhelm-Kaisen bridge to the Kunsthalle. During the procession, pyrotechnic devices, including Bengalos and firecrackers, were fired and thrown from the group; however, according to current findings, no one was injured in the march itself.

Despite the violence, the Bremen Police issued a “positive interim assessment” Saturday morning. They noted that many people had already visited the events and offerings in the city center on Friday. From the police perspective, the celebrations overall proceeded peacefully and without major disruptions.
