According to multiple media reports, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office is conducting an investigation into the former president of the Bundesnachrichtendienst for alleged treasonous spying, uncovering state secrets, attempting treason, and espionage agent activity. The investigation also reportedly targets another long-standing BND employee for aiding attempted treason and participating in treasonous spying. Hanning served as the President of the BND from 1998 to 2005, and subsequently worked as a State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Interior until 2009.
