Germany is planning to export carbon dioxide to Denmark and the Netherlands in the future. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs announced Wednesday that it has signed formal intention declarations with both countries regarding this plan. The agreements are designed to support the successful scale-up of Carbon Capture Storage and Utilization (CCS/CCU) within Germany, and the Ministry asserts that this maneuver will sustainably and long-term strengthen the competitiveness of German industry, helping to prevent escalating costs related to CO2. Captured carbon dioxide can be permanently stored deep beneath the North Sea. Denmark and the Netherlands are currently more advanced in this technology than Germany. However, experts have cautioned that environmental risks associated with the process must be carefully monitored.
