Following the election of the President of the State Parliament in Saxony-Anhalt, the Green Party has sharply attacked CDU leader Friedrich Merz. Irene Mihalic, the Parliamentary Director of the Green faction in the Bundestag, told the “Rheinische Post” that “Merz’s speculation that there might have been a false-flag operation during the election of the State Parliament President in Saxony-Anhalt is an unbearable outrage.”
The Green politician further stated that, as a responsible party chairman, “it would have been beneficial for Friedrich Merz to have promised investigations within his own ranks.” She added that such a commitment would have served as a “convincing starting signal” for a thorough review of the situation.
Merz had previously warned against rushing to conclusions regarding the CDU’s votes, while at the same time suggesting the possibility of a “false-flag operation” conducted by parliamentarians from other factions aimed at discrediting CDU deputies. However, Mihalic pointed out that while it remains unclear who the four deviating votes were, since only the CDU faction in the State Parliament showed an unclear electoral recommendation, all CDU representatives should first take a deep look in the mirror when searching for accountability for this debacle.
