SPD Launches Climate Pact ‘Project 2045’ to Embed Social Justice into Green Policy

A new climate protection association called “Project 2045” has been founded within the SPD party. The organization’s primary objective is to develop and promote socially equitable climate policy. In the founding statement, which was reported by the newspaper Spiegel, the group stressed that “awareness of the urgency of the climate crisis is here, at least since this summer.” They emphasize that matters such as whether a flat can cool down at night, whether children can play in the shade, or whether elderly neighbors can cope with the heat, should never depend on financial ability.

The association advocates for Germany to achieve climate neutrality by 2045, and the European Union to reach this goal by 2050. This project aims to refocus climate protection efforts within the SPD, particularly given the recent impression that parts of the Union were questioning these targets. To achieve this, the group plans to utilize legal opinions, concepts, and surveys on the topic. Furthermore, “Project 2045” intends to advise and equip Members of Parliament with specialized expertise. The association will also incorporate the perspective of workers by including a consultative council composed of trade union members.

Among the approximately sixty founding members is the former federal SPD Minister for the Environment, Svenja Schulze. The association will be chaired by Bundestag member Jakob Blankenburg and European Parliament member Delara Burkhardt.
