The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is embarking on a strategy to broaden its policy focus and enhance its role as a generator of new ideas. Following a series of internal meetings in Berlin, CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann announced the reinstatement and strengthening of the party’s federal specialist committees, previously suspended as part of the fundamental program process.
Linnemann emphasized the importance of these committees, envisioning them as expert advisory bodies and wellsprings of innovative policy proposals. The party, he stated, should not function solely as an extension of the chancellery but instead actively contribute to political discourse. He expressed a desire for the CDU headquarters, known as the Adenauer House, to evolve into a “think tank” capable of producing a continuous flow of fresh ideas.
Beyond the specialist committees, the CDU also plans to establish several new networks designed to engage with audiences in the pre-political sphere. Several high-profile individuals have been earmarked to lead these initiatives. Author Ahmad Mansour will head the network focused on integration and opportunity. Former CDU parliamentarian and double Olympic gold medalist Jens Lehmann will guide the sports network. And physicist Hendrik Streeck will provide leadership on scientific matters. The move signals a concerted effort by the CDU to reinvigorate its policy development and broaden its appeal.
