Franziska Brantner, the leader of the Green Party, has condemned the reported attendance of former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder at the birthday celebration of Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Brantner labeled this move a “political declaration of guilt.”
According to the Kremlin’s accounts, Schröder attended the event, an action which Brantner fiercely criticized. She remarked to the newspapers of Funke-Mediengruppe that while Putin continues to bomb Ukraine and citizens are dying daily, Gerhard Schröder is still pursuing closer ties with the Russian leader.
Brantner characterized the conflict as an “imperialist war,” asserting that Putin seeks to shift borders through force and strip Ukraine of its right to decide its own future. In her commentary, the Green Party vice-chair added that anyone who aligns with the aggressor in this situation is acting against the interests of Germany.
