BMW Severance Program Overwhelms Employee Portal Amid 8,000 Job Cuts Plans

BMW notified tens of thousands of employees this Thursday via email about the rollout of its severance program, causing the company’s internal HR platform, “HR4Me,” to become overloaded. According to reports cited by the Handelsblatt, the mass interest in the personal offers prompted the portal to fail under the heavy traffic and become inaccessible. Insider sources suggest that BMW plans to cut 8,000 positions globally by the end of next year, reducing its existing workforce of approximately 85,000. These layoffs will primarily affect employees in the company’s “indirect areas,” such as development, with the automaker aiming to achieve an annual savings of one billion euros. The offer is now available again, and one company insider told the newspaper, “We are all back in the portal now.” BMW declined to comment on the incident when reached for comment.
