SPD Minister Highlights AfD Leadership Appointment in Saxony-Anhalt as “Turning Point” and Calls for Ban Review

Federal Minister of Justice, Stefanie Hubig (SPD), has characterized the election of AfD politician Tobias Rausch as President of the Lower House of Saxony-Anhalt as a significant turning point. Speaking to “Welt am Sonntag”, Hubig noted, “There is an AfD President of the Lower House since Tuesday. That alone is a turning point.”

Hubig described the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a far-right group. “They think in a tribal and aggressively nationalist manner. Now, a member of such a party holds an important state office. Something like this has never happened in the Federal Republic,” the SPD politician added.

Addressing questions about what she fears regarding the AfD’s program in Saxony-Anhalt, Hubig stated that “something terrible” should be feared. She pointed to the party’s demand that children from refugees be educated in special segregated classes, adding that children with disabilities should also be taught separately. “This clearly shows the party’s goal: it is about division, and they start with children. Furthermore, the AfD wants to massively weaken our rule of law. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution should be disempowered, and citizens’ militias should take over the duties of the police,” the Minister of Justice asserted.

She also reiterated her call for a review to determine whether pursuing a ban against the AfD could be successful. She expects the Federal Constitutional Court to make the final decision. “I officially support this,” Hubig told “Welt am Sonntag”.
