Weimer Warns SPD Leaders: Berlin Left Alliance Threatens Federal Coalition Stability

A cabinet member of the Union party, Wolfram Weimer, has issued a stern public warning to SPD chairpersons Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas regarding potential consequences for the federal coalition over ongoing alliance negotiations in Berlin involving the Left Party, the Greens, and the SPD. Weimer told the “Bild-Zeitung” that if the SPD leadership fails to immediately and clearly prevent a Left alliance in Berlin, it would be equivalent to a vote of no confidence against the existing federal coalition.

He stressed that an SPD partnership with this particular Left Party in Berlin would have direct repercussions for the cooperative working relationship between the black and red parties at the federal level. Weimer stated that it would be intolerable if the SPD leadership allowed the principals of the party to cross what he described as “all red lines for democrats.”

The Culture Minister went on to add that a government in the capital city led by the successors of the SED would fundamentally compromise the integrity of the Federal Republic. Furthermore, Weimer warned that if the SPD were to facilitate this Left Party into power, it would also place significant strain on the coalition at the federal level.

He reminded the parties that the coalition agreement explicitly stipulated that “cooperation at all levels” with extremists must be excluded, urging them to adhere to this agreement. In his view, forming an alliance with this Berliner Left party would constitute an attack on the coherence of the political center and the political culture of the Federal Republic.
