MV Greens back coalition talks with SPD and Left for new regional government.

The Green Party in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has voted to proceed with coalition negotiations aimed at forming a Red-Red-Green state government. The decision was adopted during a small party convention held in Rostock on Saturday. With this endorsement, the path for serious talks regarding a joint government in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is now open.

Negotiations are scheduled to begin on Monday. This follows approvals given by the SPD and the Linke on Friday.

The political landscape in the region, established during the September 20th Landtag elections, saw the AfD emerge as the strongest force, garnering 38.2% of the vote. The SPD secured 35.5%, while the Linkspartei achieved 6.5%. Meanwhile, the Greens registered 5.7%.

The CDU suffered historically poor results in the state election, fetching only 4.9% and missing the 5% electoral threshold. Furthermore, the FDP, which had previously held seats in the Schwerin Landtag, moved into the unofficial opposition, receiving just 1.0%. The BSW also failed to clear the 5% threshold on its debut in the northeast, registering 4.8%.
