Alexander Schweitzer Appointed Federal Labor Minister to Navigate Deep Societal Transformation

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has appointed Alexander Schweitzer, the former Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate, to the position of new Federal Minister of Labour. Separately, Steinmeier noted that the outgoing minister, Bärbel Bas, received her certificate of dismissal away from public view in a private room.

Steinmeier reflected on Bas’s tenure, stating she managed a demanding task over the past year and a half. He emphasized that the federal government faces the critical task of ensuring the future viability of the welfare state while guiding society through one of its most profound transformations. Steinmeier highlighted that demographic shifts, digitization, and technological advancements are forcing entire sectors to reinvent themselves. He acknowledged that these factors economically challenge the nation and narrow the financial leeway of the state.

The President also addressed the current climate of public discussion, describing it as often lacking respect, particularly on social media. He commented that when private personal hardships are added to these pressures, it ultimately necessitates the establishment of boundaries based on reason.

Regarding the new appointment, Steinmeier explained that the ministry is a key portfolio whose responsibilities touch the daily lives of citizens and dictate their concerns. He stressed that Schweitzer possesses extensive relevant knowledge, having served in Rhineland-Palatinate as the Minister of Social Affairs and later as the Minister for Labor, Social Affairs, Transformation, and Digitization. According to the Federal President, Schweitzer has directly dealt with the same critical issues that now sit on his desk in Berlin.
